Longview sits in the piney woods of East Texas, about two hours east of Dallas and about an hour west of Shreveport along Interstate 20. Whether you are in town to see family, attend an event or simply slow down for a weekend, here is how we would plan a visit.

Getting here

Most visitors drive in on I-20 or US-80. Longview is also home to East Texas Regional Airport, and Amtrak's Texas Eagle stops at the Longview station. Once you are here, a car is the easiest way to explore the city and nearby towns.

The Great Texas Balloon Race

Longview is known as the Balloon Capital of Texas, thanks to the Great Texas Balloon Race. The festival is held each summer at the Longview Convention Complex with competitive flights over the city, evening balloon glows, live music and food. The race celebrates its 50th year in 2027 — check the official event website for current dates and tickets before you plan your trip.

Outdoors in town

  • Longview Arboretum & Nature Center. Gardens, walking paths and water features close to downtown — a lovely way to spend a morning.
  • Parks and trails. Longview has an extensive network of parks and paved trails for walking, running and biking.
  • Lake Cherokee. Just south of Longview, popular for boating and fishing.

Downtown Longview

The downtown Cultural District brings together museums, galleries and restaurants within a few walkable blocks. Visit the Longview Museum of Fine Arts and the Gregg County Historical Museum, and look for community events like the Downtown Live outdoor concert series. LeTourneau University's Belcher Center hosts concerts and touring performances throughout the year.

Easy day trips

  • Kilgore — A short drive west. See the East Texas Oil Museum and the oil derricks of the World's Richest Acre Park downtown.
  • Marshall — East along I-20, past Hallsville. Explore the historic downtown square, and if you visit during the holiday season, don't miss the Wonderland of Lights.
  • Caddo Lake — About an hour northeast, known for its cypress trees draped in Spanish moss. A boat tour is the best way to see it.
  • Jefferson — A historic river town north of Marshall with antique shops, bed-and-breakfasts and tours.

When to visit

Spring and fall bring the most comfortable weather and beautiful color in the woods. Summer is hot and humid — plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening — but it is also balloon race season. The holidays are a festive time to visit, especially for the lights in Marshall.
